Valli Muthappan, MD

   Dr. Valliammai (Valli) Muthappan is a native of Murrysville, PA, and attended high school at Shady Side Academy. She returned to the area in 2014 and started Cataract and Eye Consultants in 2017. She has performed over 4,000 eye surgeries, and has published papers in the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Cornea, and Clinical Ophthalmology. She has received recognition for her presentations in the US and abroad.​

   In her free time, she likes to go running and hiking. She and her husband have two young children who keep them busy as well!

Areas of Expertise

Cataract Surgery

   Dr. Valli performs the latest techniques including the placement of standard lenses, correction of astigmatism with limbal relaxing incisions (LRIs) or toric lens implants, and presbyopia correction with multifocal lens implants and the use of lasers in surgery. 

Corneal Disease and Surgery

   She sees patients with a wide variety of corneal diseases including viral and bacterial infections, dry eye, keratoconus, corneal scars and Fuch's corneal dystrophy. She is adept at performing corneal transplant procedures including Descemet's Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK).

YAG Laser procedures

   Dr. Valli performs YAG lasers for opacification of lens implants that occurs after cataract surgery.

Other Eye Conditions and Surgeries

      She also sees patient with a wide variety of other eye conditions, including

           conjunctival lesions and pterygia (growths on the white part of the eye)

           anterior uveitis (inflammation in the front part of the eye)

           issues with the iris (colored part of the eye).

     She performs complex anterior eye surgeries such as

           removal of intraocular lenses

           replacement of intraocular lenses

           removal of growths on the surface of the eye.
